Triumph Herald Buyer's Guide
When purchasing a Triumph Herald classic car, there are several key aspects to inspect. The Standard's little 'four' engine is dependable and has a pleasant sound, although it is not particularly fast. It should feel smooth and responsive.
One major weakness of the engine is thrust-bearing wear, which can damage the block if neglected. To check for this issue, have someone press the clutch while you observe the engine front pulley. If it moves forward noticeably, it may indicate a problem.
- Check for rust, cracks, and distortion in the front valance, bonnet 'D-plates', and inner arches.
- Most Triumph Heralds now have glassfibre front valances, but the original steel valance is shown above.
- Trunnions should be oiled with EP90 every 6000 miles to prevent seizure and potential kingpin damage.
- Inspect the wood for damage and/or delamination, and the floors for rot.
Complete Triumph Herald seat-trim kits can be purchased, but beige carpets are no longer available.
