The story revolves around Dr. Genessier, a physician who has become distant from his patients and admirers due to his obsession with finding his missing daughter.

Dr. Genessier speaks of radical new medical advancements, but his patients and admirers notice a change in him. The police find a body in the river with a unique identifier, and Dr. Genessier holds a funeral, hoping to find closure. However, it is revealed that his daughter is not actually missing.
