A person of interest in the case of missing British girl Cheryl Grimmer has been identified by Australian politician Jeremy Buckingham.
Cheryl, aged three, was kidnapped from a changing area in 1970, near the city of Wollongong in New South Wales (NSW) state, after spending a morning at the seaside with her mother and three brothers.
The case saw a man, known as Mercury, charged in 2017 with Cheryl’s abduction and murder, but key evidence was ruled inadmissible and the charges were dropped.
Mercury, who was 16 at the time of the incident, had a confession from 1971, but it was not enough to secure a conviction.
The body of the child, originally from Bristol, has never been discovered.
