UN Official Warns of "Lost Generation" in Gaza
A senior UN official has warned that Gaza risks a "lost generation" due to the devastating state of its education system.
"If we don’t start a real transition for all children in February, we will enter a fourth year. And then we can talk about a lost generation."
According to Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF's regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, nearly all children in Gaza have been without formal schooling for a third consecutive year.
- 85% of schools in Gaza have been destroyed or are unusable after two years of war between Israel and Hamas.
- Only a fraction of children are attending makeshift classrooms, with education still largely halted.
Author's summary: Gaza's education system is on the brink of collapse.
