The newly discovered object 3I/ATLAS, officially designated C/2025 N1, has surprised the astronomical community.
Detected in early July 2025 by the ATLAS survey in Chile, it was quickly determined that this was not an ordinary comet due to its hyperbolic orbit, indicating it is not gravitationally bound to the Sun.
This confirms that 3I/ATLAS originated from beyond our Solar System, making it only the third interstellar object observed, following 2017's ʻOumuamua and 2019's 2I/Borisov.
The discovery triggered an immediate international response, raising questions about the chemistry of the object's birthplace.
