1,000 lost dog toys are part of health concerns leading to permanent recreational closure of Colorado Springs reservoir

Colorado Springs Reservoir Closure

A reservoir in Colorado Springs has been permanently closed to the public due to health and safety concerns. The South Suburban Reservoir, part of the city's drinking water system, was found to be too small to adequately dilute pollutants generated by dogs.

For years, off-leash dogs were able to play in the water, but this has led to management challenges, including safety concerns and water quality issues. The reservoir, built in 1932, is one of two in the 318-acre Stratton Open Space.

“This decision was difficult, but necessary,”

said the utility in a recent press release, citing the reasons for the closure. The agency announced that it would not reopen the reservoir for! recreation after ongoing repairs to the dam are completed.

Author's summary: Reservoir closed due to health concerns.
