Acquittal of Enrile Draws Parallels to Flood Control Scam
The acquittal of high-profile officials in large-scale graft cases has raised concerns that newly lodged corruption complaints, including those related to multibillion-peso flood control anomalies, may meet a similar fate, according to political analysts.
“It’s a farcical decision and it gives us a clue to what will happen to the flood control mess if we do not change the system,”
said David Michael M. San Juan, a De La Salle University professor and convener of Professionals for a Progressive Economy, in a Facebook Messenger chat.
- San Juan noted that current officials may file cases against both high-ranking and low-level officials to demonstrate their efforts, but the pace of progress will be slow.
The Sandiganbayan Special Third Division recently cleared Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile and his former chief of staff Jessica Lucila G. of charges.
