Middlebury Mourns the Death of Lia Smith '26
Lia Smith '26, a 21-year-old student at Middlebury College, has passed away. She was found dead on Thursday, Oct. 23, by Vermont State Police in a field near the Knoll, the college's organic farm.
According to a news release from the Vermont State Police on Friday, Oct. 24, her death was confirmed as a suicide. Smith had been reported missing on Sunday, Oct. 19, after not being seen since Friday, prompting a large-scale search involving the FBI.
Smith was a double major in computer science and statistics from Woodside, California. She was a member of the Middlebury Women's Swimming and Diving team, Chess Club, Japanese Club, and Women in Computer Science.
