AAO 2025: New Technologies and Research Highlights
The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) annual scientific meeting in Orlando, Florida, featured new technologies and ongoing research in the field of ophthalmology.
Researchers from Massachusetts Eye and Ear presented a study using the TriNetX network to analyze electronic health records of over 17,000 patients with and without xanthelasma.
- The study found a 14% risk of cardiovascular events in the xanthelasma group, compared to 11.8% in the control group.
- The xanthelasma group also had a higher rate of high cholesterol or lipid disorders, at 50% compared to 38% in the control group.
The effects of GLP-1 drugs on eye health and a potential sign of cardiovascular disease were also discussed at the meeting.
