Biotech Nephrogen: Combining AI and Gene Therapy to Reverse Kidney Disease

Demetri Maxim's life was affected by kidney disease at a young age, when his mother's kidneys stopped working and she had to undergo dialysis.

Maxim's mother later received a kidney transplant, but he inherited Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) from her. About 1 in 7 Americans have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), with 10% of cases due to genetic conditions.

Maxim became determined to find a cure, and his breakthrough moment came in 2021 when Nature Magazine published a study showing that PKD can be reversed in mice using CRISPR technology.

Maxim has been obsessed with finding a cure for himself and others ever since he was in high school.
