The State of Alaska has started distributing disaster relief payments to residents of Western Alaska affected by storm damage from ex-Typhoon Halong, with over $217,000 distributed as of Friday.
More than 941 applications for individual assistance have been received, with the application period remaining open through November. Residents can apply on the state's website.
To assist storm evacuees who lost identification or essential documents, the Alaska Department of Motor Vehicles and the Department of Health have set up booths at emergency evacuation shelters in Anchorage to provide replacements. The Association of Village Council Presidents is also offering tribal IDs in the shelters, with state caseworkers and a Yup'ik speaking public notary available to help with documentation.
