A Brief History of the British Museum

The British Museum's central London home has a 272-year-long history. The redesign of the Western Range, announced earlier this year, is the latest stage of this history.

In 1778, Michael Angelo Rooker drew the gateway of Montagu House, the first site of the British Museum.

A Midnight Tour

In March 1958, Kenneth Clark, then chair of the Arts Council, took Henry Moore on a midnight tour of the British Museum for his series "Is Art Necessary?".

Armed with “enormous torchlights”, the art historian and the sculptor spotlit the megalithic stone moai from Rapa Nui (Easter Island), some monumental Egyptian treasures and the Parthenon Sculptures.

They used their torches to create dramatic effects, making the Panathenaic horsemen appear "as if they were galloping".

Author's summary: British Museum's history spans 272 years.
