Led by £10.2m cheetah miniature, Aga Khan collection breaks all-time record for South Asian art sale

Record-Breaking Sale of South Asian Art

Led by the £10.2m sale of Basawan's "A Family of Cheetahs in a Rocky Landscape", the Aga Khan collection has broken the all-time record for South Asian art sales at Christie's London, totaling £45.8m.

The Indian miniaturist Basawan painted the family of cheetahs against a backdrop of red rocks, twisting trees, and deep-gilt skies in the late 16th century.

Basawan's work sold for £10.2m, or $13.6m with fees, becoming the most expensive work of classical Indian or Islamic painting at auction.

The sale comes close to the most expensive Indian painting at auction, M.F. Husain's 1954 "Gram Yatra", which sold for $13.8m in March.
