Astronomers Create First 3D Map of an Exoplanet's Atmosphere

A recent study published in Nature Astronomy presents a first-time 3D map of an exoplanet's atmosphere based on temperature.

The study used data from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope to develop a new method called 3D eclipse mapping on WASP-18b, an "ultra-hot" Jupiter located over 400 light-years from Earth.

WASP-18b has a radius slightly larger than Jupiter's and ten times its mass, orbiting extremely close to its star.

This study has the potential to help scientists better understand the formation and evolution of exoplanet atmospheres.

Author's summary: Astronomers create a 3D map of an exoplanet's atmosphere.
