EU Member Countries Oppose Lifting Ban on Cancer-Causing Chemicals in Cosmetics
As part of its simplification drive, the European Commission wants to relax the rules for these substances. However, member states are set to oppose this proposal.
A draft proposal seen by POLITICO reveals that the Council of the EU plans to reject the Commission's proposal to lift a blanket ban on cancer-causing chemicals in certain cosmetic products.
- The European Commission's Chemicals Omnibus bill, released in July, includes the proposal to lift the automatic ban on non-ingested cosmetics containing carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reprotoxic (CMR) substances.
- The idea behind this proposal is that cosmetics containing these substances pose a lower risk when they are not inhaled or swallowed.
