The Punjab government has initiated the process to privatise public colleges, following the privatisation of government schools, sparking protests from professors and lecturers' associations.
So far, 12,500 public schools have been handed over under the privatisation programme. Currently, Punjab has 750 colleges, with 100 colleges, including both commerce colleges in Rawalpindi, to be outsourced in the first phase.
According to Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar,
the government cannot justify the Rs300,000 annual cost per student at commerce colleges.
