The familiarity of a general store – The Bowdoin Orient

The Familiarity of a General Store

A visit to the BCMA to see the Gordon Parks exhibit sparked a reflection on general stores in Maine.

The author was drawn to a photograph of a quaint general store, which led to thoughts on how community is learned through such places.

Community isn’t necessarily about town meetings or Facebook groups but is derived from the places that sell us coffee, eggs and a sense of belonging.

The author recalls their first experience at a general store, Hope General Store, where they bought greasy pizza, delicious brownies, and unbeatable iced tea.

This childhood memory has stayed with them, and they still buy Little Lad’s popcorn to this day.

Author's summary: General stores foster community sense.
