Dr. Karen Stander, the chairperson of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) board, has resigned with immediate effect due to a work environment marked by racism, bullying, intimidation, and personal threats.
“Regrettably, the environment within which the board has operated has become increasingly toxic, characterised by bullying, intimidation, racism and hostility. These conditions have made it impossible to continue discharging my duties effectively and in good conscience,”
Stander cited the worsening conditions within the board and the impact on her personal life as reasons for her resignation, stating she could no longer fulfill her duties effectively.
In a letter to Minister of Higher Education Buti Manamela, Stander detailed the toxic work environment, which included racism, bullying, and threats to her family's safety.
