A leading Irish fish processing company, Sean Ward (Fish Exports) Ltd, has been found not guilty of ensuring the accuracy of equipment used to weigh fish at their Co Donegal premises.
The company, based in Killybegs, faced two separate fisheries charges at Letterkenny Circuit Court, but after a three-day trial, Judge John Aylmer directed the jury to find the accused company not guilty due to a lack of evidence against them.
The case was sparked by an investigation carried out at the company's premises during an inspection on September 14th and 15th of 2015.
The decision to take the court case has led to anger from fisheries representatives who claim such cases were now “bordering on harassment” against Irish fishermen merely trying to make a living.
The verdict has been met with criticism from fisheries representatives, who argue that such cases are excessive and target Irish fishermen unfairly.
