Researchers have discovered a surprising connection between long-term melatonin use and heart failure in patients with chronic insomnia.
A study of over 130,000 adults with insomnia found that taking melatonin for a year or more was associated with a nearly doubled risk of developing heart failure, over triple the risk of hospitalization for heart failure, and nearly twice the risk of death over five years.
Marketed as nature’s sleep switch, melatonin has become a nightly habit for millions.
These findings were presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2025, highlighting a potential risk of long-term melatonin use.
Author's summary: Melatonin may harm the heart.
