Man Pleads Guilty to Distributing Drugs Leading to Death

A Newton County resident, Matthew Bruce Burley, pleaded guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter, distributing fentanyl, and trafficking fentanyl.

The charges are related to the overdose death of James Nail, Jr. on December 30, 2022. According to the Newton County District Attorney's Office, Burley will serve 15 years in prison without parole, followed by 15 years on probation.

On the day of the incident, officers from the Covington Police Department responded to an overdose call on Hannah Street, where Nail was hospitalized and later pronounced dead at Piedmont Newton.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) Crime Lab conducted tests, revealing that Nail had fentanyl and xylazine, also known as "tranq", in his system, causing his death.

Naloxone, commonly known by its brand name Narcan, is a medication used to reverse the effects of a drug overdose.
