Last big cats to be euthanised at Whangārei's lion park as 'no real options left'

Last Big Cats to be Euthanised at Whangārei's Lion Park

Kamo Wildlife Sanctuary confirmed the final seven elderly lions are to be put down.

The last seven surviving big cats at Whangārei’s famous lion park will be euthanised this week, as per the decision made by owners Bolton Equities.

“This has been an incredibly hard time for all of us,”

said Janette Vallance, facility operator. The remaining big cats are elderly lions, aged between 18 and 21 years.

“There were no real options left,”

said Vallance. The staff and I are devastated. Experts have stated that the big cats are unable to be released into the wild as they lack the hunting and social skills needed to survive.
