Republican party leaders in the US may be waiting for Zohran Mamdani's New York mayoral race win to create a rift within the Democratic Party.
After being announced as New York City’s mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani challenged the U.S. president in his victory speech, saying
"The Donald Trumps of our city have grown far too comfortable taking advantage of their tenants"and asked him to “turn up the volume” as he knew the president was watching.
Trump responded on his Truth Social account, posting
"TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT"and later
"…AND SO IT BEGINS!"despite Democrats sweeping the elections.
