Cambrian College is launching a Dental Assisting program starting this January to meet the demand for qualified staff in Northern Ontario dental practices. The program spans 10 months, combining online learning with weekend classes on campus to offer flexibility for students who are working.
Students will complete a seven-week placement to gain hands-on experience in a dental practice, enhancing their practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge.
“Dental assistants play a vital role in supporting dentists and dental hygienists, and enhancing patient care,” said Rachel Steels, dean of Cambrian’s School of Health Sciences.
Dental assistants handle various clinical and administrative duties such as infection control, taking x-rays, assisting during procedures, chairside support, patient education, and managing office coordination.
The decision to introduce the Dental Assisting program was motivated by significant demand from both the community and the dental industry.
Cambrian College's new Dental Assisting program offers flexible learning and practical experience to address the increasing need for skilled dental support staff in Northern Ontario.
