Families living near the intersection of Eton and Sheffield in Birmingham say crossing the street there is risky because many drivers fail to stop at stop signs. The four-way stop, located close to Woodward and West 14 Mile, has become a concern for locals.
Kimberly, a resident, described the intersection as “an accident waiting to happen.” She explained that drivers often speed and ignore the stop signs, which endangers children and families in the neighborhood.
“People are flying through the intersection and they’re not paying any attention to people around them.”
Local 4 visited the location on a weekday morning. Although no speeding was observed, they saw several drivers perform a slow roll instead of fully stopping at the signs.
“When I’m driving along here, most people are driving much faster than that. I’ve been passed on Eaton in the residential area doing 25. They’re very dangerous.”
Kimberly admits she tries to avoid the intersection when possible. She feels anxious crossing the street and worries about the safety of neighborhood walkers.
“I’m paranoid when I have to cross here. We walk the neighborhood a lot and it scares me.”
The couple suggests that changes in traffic control could help improve safety in the area.
