The Miami Heat’s difficulty in the middle was apparent even before Bam Adebayo left the game early in the first quarter of Wednesday night’s 122-112 loss to the Denver Nuggets. The team’s challenges at the center spot have been an issue from the start of the season.
After Adebayo hobbled off and headed to the locker room at Ball Arena, the Heat’s interior presence was severely diminished. With Adebayo’s left foot under evaluation following the game, the team faces uncertainty about their frontline moving forward.
“We only got two, true — I mean Bam’s not a true center — guys that can play the five on this team,” said veteran guard Norman Powell. “So him going down, we’ve got to go small ball a lot. So it’s definitely tough.”
Powell acknowledged that the Heat entered the season counting only on Adebayo and second-year player Kel’el Ware as potential options at center.
The challenge for coach Erik Spoelstra’s team will be adapting to Adebayo’s status and finding effective solutions in the paint as tests continue on Thursday.
Summary: The Miami Heat’s vulnerability at center was exposed further by Bam Adebayo's injury, forcing reliance on undersized players and impacting their rebounding and inside defense against the Nuggets.
