Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin, in partnership with the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association and the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, is organizing a webinar focused on ethical and responsible media practices when reporting on crime victims.
The discussion will be moderated by Nela Kalpic, State Director for Marsy’s Law Wisconsin.
The webinar will highlight guidelines from the National Center for Victims of Crime (NCVC) aimed at improving reporter interactions with victims. Key points include protecting survivors from unwanted exposure and using their stories to benefit both journalists and victims.
“The guide includes best practices for interacting with victims, including how to protect survivors from unwanted attention and how to leverage their stories to yield positive results for the reporter and the survivor.”
Additionally, the session will explain how these practices align with Wisconsin’s constitutional amendment—Marsy’s Law—which secures victims’ rights such as privacy, notice, and involvement in the justice system.
Marsy’s Law guarantees crime victims constitutional rights that ensure their privacy, timely notifications, and active participation in legal proceedings.
This webinar offers essential guidance on ethical crime victim reporting while reinforcing Marsy’s Law protections to ensure respectful, informed media coverage that supports and safeguards victims.
