Carrie Bickmore Named 2026 Australian of the Year for Victoria: A Beacon of Hope in Brain Cancer Research

Carrie Bickmore Named 2026 Australian of the Year for Victoria

Carrie Bickmore, a well-known broadcaster and cancer fundraiser, received the 2026 Australian of the Year award for Victoria on November 6 in Melbourne. The honor recognizes her major contributions to brain cancer research and advocacy.

Commitment to Brain Cancer Research

Bickmore’s dedication to combating brain cancer is deeply personal. Since 2015, she has raised over $27 million to support research focused on a cure. This led to the creation of The Brain Cancer Centre in 2021, a pioneering facility that brings together top researchers.

The center has backed many research projects across Australia and launched innovative clinical trials, significantly progressing brain cancer treatment. This work is critical because brain cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Australians under 40. Bickmore’s commitment is fueled by her personal loss, having lost her husband Greg to the disease in 2010.

Additional Honorees

Besides Bickmore, the awards also recognized other outstanding Victorians. Bryan Lipmann AM, an advocate for elderly homeless people, was named the 2026 Senior Australian of the Year for Victoria.

"Carrie Bickmore’s efforts have not only advanced research but also brought hope to many Australians affected by brain cancer."

Author's summary: Carrie Bickmore’s tireless fundraising and advocacy have propelled brain cancer research forward, honoring her personal loss with meaningful progress and hope for patients.
